Overview
The Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development ( OERD ) is NIU's most entrepreneurial externally focused unit. OERD staff members help advance the university's mission by applying their subject matter expertise, networks, creativity, and initiative to address regional, state, national and global challenges and opportunities.
Primary responsibilities of OERD are to leverage the division's knowledge of the region; encourage and support collaboration with communities, create and develop funding and revenue generation models, and position NIU as a national thought leader. The result of this work is to attract external funding, inform policy-making, increase college and career readiness across our region, and provide NIU with access to prospective students and their families, professional associations, and alumni. In executing these responsibilities, OERD staff understand partnerships as assets, collaboration as a standard of practice, and networks of partners, stakeholders, and customers as a primary organizing principle.
Position Summary
Outreach and Engagement Project Coordinators are professionals who conduct the division's multitude of outreach and engagement activities with customers and partners across the region in support of program delivery. This position will be primarily focused on the management of Community Outreach and Engagement, events, and personnel. Outreach and Engagement team members operate independently with minimal supervision and collaborate intentionally with colleagues across the division and across the university.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
NIU STEAM Engagement Coordinator - 70%
- Project manager for the planning, development, and administration of deliverables and special projects for NIU STEAM - for both internally and externally facing NIU STEAM programs.
- Includes development, management, and coordination of NIU STEAM engagement programs, including, but not limited to, overseeing the development, delivery and evaluation of project delivery in areas such as, but not limited to camps, STEM Cafes, Teen Cafes, summer school programming, community health and wellness programming, FoodMASTER programming, grants, university projects, Barb City STEAM team and more.
- Development and implementation of priorities and goals; strategic planning; and comprehensive timeline for event categories, tasks, and assignments for professional and support staff.
- Logistics management/coordination of NIU STEAM Engagement Projects.
- STEM Cafes and Teen Cafes.
- Oversee operations to ensure program goals and objectives are met within timelines and within budget.
- Researching and implementing specifications for the purposes of program growth, communication, task efficiency, budget improvement, and environmentally sustainable practices.
- Contract management for external services and partners.
- Connect to Broader Impact goals as needed and requested by faculty.
- Serve as liaison for inter-departmental and affiliate collaboration along with coordinating and managing external and internal support for event needs.
- Assist in report development and evaluation in collaboration with Director and delivery team.
- Website and media management, including assigning and coordinating responsibilities across professional and support staff.
- Supply and resource management and coordination for personnel and grant operations.
- Assists in budget development and tracks budget health across multiple funding sources throughout the year.
- Supervise student workers, extra-help, and graduate assistants assigned to NIU STEAM Engagement.
Instructional Delivery & Assessment - 25%
- Develop and teach non-credit courses in the area of expertise.
- Develop instructional and informational applications for customers.
- Direct the work of assigned students and graduate assistants to ensure that programs meet requirements for deadlines, budgets and quality.
- Recruit and collaborate with NIU faculty, staff, and students to participate in NIU STEAM instructional programs.
- Support all staff in a continuous improvement process that upgrade methodologies, technologies, and reference materials, producing metrics that establish program accountability.
- Coordinate with the P20 Center's personnel to ensure effective and efficient administration and operations.
Other Related Duties - 5%
- Work with staff and students in instructional development, delivery and evaluation.

- Cultivate positive relationships with external individuals and organizations, including developing and sustaining both new and existing partnerships.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

- Bachelor's degree in business, education, hospitality, or related field
- A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position.
- Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.
Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
- Skill in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Skill in scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.

Specialty Factors (Civil Service)
Required Specialty Factors:
- Bachelor's degree in business, education, hospitality, or related field
- Five (5) years of experience in customer service, community engagement and/or public facing programming.
- Two (2) years of experience in large scale event planning and management including program budgets and staff.
- One (1) year of experience leading teams.
- Two (2) years of experience in collaboration and developing partnerships with other entities/divisions
Note: Experience listed above may be concurrent, not expected to be independent of each other.
Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)
- Master's degree in related field preferred
- K-12 licensure preferred
- Experience using Windows, Mac, Microsoft Office, multimedia tools, and social media tools for teaching purposes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships across entities toward a common purpose.
- Ability to manage a large number of diverse tasks simultaneously.
- In-depth knowledge of instructional design principles, evidence based practices and success in online and/or in-person delivery.
- Ability to work successfully as a team leader and as a team member.
- Commitment to accountability for the university's outreach and engagement mission, presidential goals such as increasing partnerships, and division goals for mutually beneficial engagement with communities across the region.
- Experience in working in sales and/or partner and stakeholder relations
- Manage projects to complete deliverables on time and within budget.
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently with minimal supervision
- Flexible schedule including some evenings or weekends
- Dependable transportation (travel expenses will be reimbursed)
