Faculty Opening – Assistant Professor of Innovation in Human-Centered Experiences

Boston University invites applications for a non-tenure track assistant professor position in the School of Hospitality Administration (SHA).

 One Assistant Professor in Hospitality Business Management, specializing in Innovation and/or Design Thinking. Central to the hospitality industry is the creation of memorable, high-quality experiences, across digital and physical touchpoints. These experiences are designed not only for customers, but also for employees of the organization, as part of its experience management practice—the process of monitoring every interaction that people (customers, employees, and other key stakeholders) have with the organization to identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and disruption. In addition to the study of human behavior at the individual level, experience management also emphasizes understanding how organizations develop an experience-focused culture.

 This unique position integrates internal and external perspectives of the organizations to more extensively address how organizations create positive, holistic experiences for both their own employees as well as guests, customers, and/or other external stakeholders. It combines the disciplines of Innovation and Design Thinking, and Experience Management, emphasizing data-intensive approaches.

 We are seeking candidates who can teach courses and conduct research in the emerging domain of Innovation and Design Thinking, with a focus on human-centered experiences in the hospitality and other service industries.

 We seek candidates with an educational or career background in Design Thinking, Human-Centered Design, Innovation, Hospitality Business Management, Consumer Behavior, Marketing, Management Science, Strategy, or Business Management. Experience and/or demonstrated interest in the hospitality industry is highly desirable.

 The ideal candidate must demonstrate a willingness to develop and teach courses in innovation, disruption, technology-based disruption, design thinking, experience management and related topics. Must also demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with colleagues at SHA to conduct research on key factors of the experience that are both internal and external to hospitality organizations.

 Qualifications: Candidates for the Assistant Professor position should have earned master’s and/or doctoral degrees in innovation, design thinking, human-centered design, hospitality, business management, experience management or related fields. Demonstrated record of, or potential for teaching a broad range of topics in the area; evidence of effective teaching and/or potential for high quality research required. Candidates should be able to teach related courses. Experience in working with federal grants, international exposure and work experience are highly desired. Aptitude in cutting-edge quantitative research methods, including big data methods, is highly desirable.

Expectations:

Assistant Professors are expected to teach, conduct, and actively publish peer-reviewed scholarly research and participate in professional and university service.

 Occasional travel to national and international conferences; Extensive networks in innovation and design thinking communities, hospitality, experience management or data analytics are preferred.

 All faculty members are expected to develop connections with industry professionals and to continuously update their expertise through industry consulting and scholarly activities. Faculty members are also expected to advise individual students and student groups and participate in school and university service activities.

 School Profile: The School of Hospitality Administration at Boston University is a specialized business program focused on the hospitality sector, especially the hotel and restaurant industries, with a solid liberal arts foundation, with approximately 300 students enrolled.
